Critical Reflection

After finishing this communication module, I have learned multiple ways to improve my communication skills. Any communication can be divided into two broad categories: verbal communication and written communication. But what makes the difference between a well-performed communication where one is able to get their idea across and a poorly executed one is not just the technique but also the pre-planning involved. One such technique is critical thinking. And I’m going to start off by sharing what I have learned from using the Paul-Elder framework. Now picture myself giving a pitch to propose my idea to a board of directors. Before even starting my speech, I need to come in prepared by knowing the purpose of my proposal and being familiar with my ideas and concepts. The reason for this is that, whoever my audience is, they are likely to have far more experience in the field than I do, so the last thing I want to do is walk into the room empty-handed. Next, the Paul-Elder framework gives m

Little's article "Firefighting Robots Go Autonomous" (2021) informs us that dangerous firefighting tasks are carried out by firefighting drones. These drones come in varying shapes and sizes, ranging from military tank-like wagons weighing two tons to lightweight drones that can fly. Every year, around three thousand Americans lose their lives in 350,000 households and wildfires, of which 80 are firefighters. With the introduction of firefighting drones that can enter burning buildings with temperature and smoke hazards deemed too dangerous, countless lives could have been saved. Little reported that these drones in operation are currently remote-controlled, while autonomous, self-driven intelligent drones are in development by researchers. The issue that is holding these drones from going fully into production is not a matter of technological advancement but a lack of investment funds due to the high cost that dissuades investors. CRITICAL THINKING: THE SOUL OF COMMUNICATION

After reading the excerpt, I have learnt the importance of how effective workplace communication affects the overall efficiency of a workplace. When workplace communications fail, problems such as miscommunication arise. It leads to the loss of productivity and revenue for the company. In such a situation, a strong and capable leader is required to prevent this from happening. He or she is able to lead by example, be trusted, and prevent communication from breaking down. Yet, I felt that everyone has the capacity to be that leader by upholding proper communication and critical thinking skillsets. Applying critical thinking helps us to review the information properly before relaying our ideas clearly and systematically with the help of effective communication. Hence, when done properly, it will dramatically reduce the likelihood of misunderstanding and confusion, increasing workplace efficiency and gaining greater revenue for the company.

FORMAL LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

Dear Professor Brad, My name is CongWei, and I was a former electronics student at Temasek Polytechnic. I believe you will remember me as the student who was absent from your first lesson, hence explaining the missing name tag on my table. I came to SIT to further my studies in mechanical engineering as I believe, that at a certain point in our lives, we should start contributing back to society. For me, arming myself with the knowledge and mindset of an engineer would have done exactly that. I would like to start off by talking about my communication strength. I'm able to project my confidence across to the audience when I'm giving a speech. I don't get nervous easily when I'm addressing a huge crowd. The confidence in me comes in handy as most of our daily communication comes in the form of face-to-face verbal communication. In contrast, being an engineering student over the years had softened my writing skills. I find it difficult not to make any grammatical or voc
